Colors and Designs Change

All clothing at one time or another has undergone a change. A wedding dress is no exception. It has changed both in fashion and in style. Wedding dresses of the medieval period represented the class that the bride was coming from. If a bride were in the high class of families, she would wear a dress that was rich in colors and designed in fabrics that were highly expensive. What kinds of fabrics would make up this dress? Usually fur, silk and velvet. Often times, lower class families and brides would mimic those upper class dresses as much as they could.

Throughout the centuries, brides would often wear dresses that were made of fashionable material that they could afford to purchase. How could a bride’s wealth standing be determined? Her wealth could be determined by how much material she chose to use for her wedding dress. Most lower class brides who could not purchase a new dress would wear their Sunday dress as their wedding dress.

Fashion in the 1920s

Wedding dress fashions during the 1920s consisted of dresses that were short in the front and had a train. A cloche-style wedding veil was also worn.

Fashion in the 1940s and up

Wedding dress trends that were so popular were tossed aside for the Victorian full-skirted design. Many brides looking for a wedding dress will opt for the Victorian skirt in lieu of other wedding dresses/gowns.

White Wedding Dresses

Until Mary Queen of Scots wore a white wedding dress when she got married to Francois II of France, white was not considered a conventional wedding color. In fact, white, at the time, was considered a color for bereavement. When did white become popular as a wedding dress color? In 1840, Queen Victoria married Albert of Saxe-Coberg in a white wedding dress. Victoria had white lace she owned and wanted to use it on her wedding dress. She insisted that her dress be white in color. Once their wedding portrait was printed, brides would wear the color white to honor the Queen.

The tradition to wear white for a wedding dress still continues. However, at one time the color was associated with purity and virginity.  What does the white wedding dress symbolize today? It’s nothing more than a dress worn at a wedding.

Indian Wedding Dresses

Colors of an Indian wedding dress vary in the region. Northern India brides will tend to wear a red or green wedding dress. The brides of Southern India often choose white or cream colored dresses. The wedding dresses of this area have changed little throughout the years. There are three common styles of wedding dresses. They include:

- Gaghra choli

- Sari

- Shalwa chameez.

Nearly everyone knows the sari. A sari is a cloth that is wrapped around the body, secured by it being tucked into the waistband or held together with pins. A gaghra is a long skirt with a short top. Brides can use a dupatta, which is worn on the bride’s chest. A dupatta is simply a scarf. A shalwa chameez is just a long tunic that goes over pants. A dupatta can be worn here but it can go on the chest, around the head or neck.

Chinese Wedding Dresses

The luckiest color in the Chinese culture is red. Therefore, brides will wear a red wedding dress. Marriage is such a sacred event that nearly every tradition besides the wedding dress will have the color red on it including red invitations.

Chinese brides will wear three different wedding dresses. The first is a white dress with a veil usually worn at the wedding ceremony. During the banquet, she is to wear a red Chinese wedding dress. Just before their departure, the bride will change into a third wedding dress.

Although there is a ton of work to go into them, weddings are a time for merriment. Brides have so much to contend with but know what style of wedding dress they would like to have on their wedding dress including the color and design. If you want a color other than white or wear a dress that would have been worn in the medieval times, it certainly would cause a stir… a wedding that will be remembered. After all, it is the bride’s day.
