Wedding Dresses Over the Centuries

Wedding dresses have changed much over the centuries. However, one thing that has yet to change is the bride’s needs to make that dress look special on her “special” day.

It used to be that only rich people were able to purchase materials of purple, red and black. These wealthy brides could wear these colored dresses along with their jewels. It would allow the bride to glitter in the sunlight.

Dresses that had flowing sleeves or had a train symbolized the person’s class. Poorer brides would use fewer materials to design their dresses. In those days, this typically meant the train of the dress was gone. However, this “train” turned into a tradition seen today.

How else did wedding gowns change? Remember, centuries ago, it was okay to wear a gown of color. Now, white or a variation of the color is tradition. Still, white isn’t a very practical color and now blue and pink are being seen as traditional wedding colors.

Dresses of the 1800’s were used for not only weddings but for church as well. Another appropriate dress color was gray, however brides could use their dresses for other occasions decorating them with temporary items.

The wedding dresses seen in today’s society made its appearance in the 1800’s. During the 19th century, the veil made its appearance on the wedding dress. Dresses could also be made with machines without being destroyed. It was also socially accepted to wear the wedding dress after the wedding was over. The dress could be trimmed over and over for the different function a woman had to attend.

With the years gone by, the fashions that women wore for a wedding dress changed. How so? For starters, hems rose and hems fell. Dresses could go with a train or without one. Brides would decide if they wanted a long dress or short one. Other parts of the dress would change with style. These include: neck styles and sleeves lengths. However, sleeveless, tight sleeves and full sleeves have come and gone through the decades. There have been so many designs through the years… from simple and elegant to detailed.

As there have been many designs changes in wedding dresses, add one more to the list. The fashion of today has introduced the strapless dress. This dress looks nice on certain women and figures. Still, others want the designs of centuries past.

When a woman is getting married, what must she look out for her wedding dress? The dress should fit her style as well as her figure and be within the financial budget she has. It should also fit the kind of wedding she intends to have.

As an example: A woman with a large frame should look at the dresses she likes and will fit her. She needs a dress that will flatter her curves because each bride wants to look their best on their wedding day. If she has a budget of $500, then there is no need for her to look at the $5,000 rack. A bride should also take into consideration that if her wedding is to be held in a garden, that she doesn’t need a heavy dress.

If you need to know if the dress fits your body, always bring someone you trust along and look at yourself in a full-view mirror. Remember, this is an experience you will remember for a long time. You don’t want to look sloppy for it.
